August 22 work day

At East End 30 members representing VCU’s ASPiRE program braved the temperature and worked an hour and a half clearing an untamed section between the U road and the access road. We did find one new gravestone. As we were leaving a family stopped by. We learned one of the woman’s grandparents is buried at Evergreen.

August 19 work day

Many thanks to members of the LDS church of N. Chesterfield, who returned to East End on a sweltering morning. They cleared a ton of brush, hauled it all to the road, and uncovered a few headstones from the early 1900s—all while keeping Teacake entertained. The section they worked on has been transformed.

Aug. 5 work day

We worked out at East End for over 4 hours this morning. We had 2 regular community volunteers and 3 core volunteers. We mostly did maintenance. We re-cleared vegetation off of plots, mowed, ran the weed eater, located a couple plots for family members, took GPS readings and even uncovered a couple new gravestones.

July 29 work day

We worked at East End for over 3 hours this morning in spite of the rain. We had 22 volunteers from The Mission Continues and Would Warrior Project, community members and regulars. We worked at re-clearing an overgrown area. Several plots were cleared. While taking a short tour, we found a gravestone that the rain had partially uncovered. We dug it out and cleaned it.

We also had a group of scouts from Troop 400 working at Evergreen on an Eagle Project. I understand they got a lot cleared and found several gravestones.

Gravestone cleaning

We have been trying an approved biological cleaning solution, D/2, for cleaning gravestones at East End Cemetery. These photos show the progress of the cleaning. We applied the cleaning solution twice on June 24 and then let it and mother nature do the rest. The two top images are before and after on June 24. The lower left image is from June 27 and the lower right corner image is from today, July 13.
